Word explores artists’ use of text to convey and emphasize meaning and develop aesthetic. These artists demonstrate that when the use of text is successful, the inherent lines and shapes become part of the art itself. Text has a long history of use in art, dating back to medieval times. The Dada movement was at the forefront of utilizing text in art, and conceptual artists from the 1960s increased its popularity. Today, even with social media saturation, artists continue to embrace the use of text to heighten the message of their work to the point where the words often become the work. This will be a group show featuring artists from Rhode Island, New York, St. Louis, and beyond. We have already secured artwork from Diane Barcelo, Alexandra Broches, Robin Crocker, Tom Culora, Lesley Dill, Lalla Essaydi, Maira Kalman, Gayle Wells Mandle, Jessica Rosner, Scherer and Ouporov, Edwin Schlossberg, Buzz Spector, May Stevens, Kevin Veronneau, and have on loan work by Jenny Holzer, Joseph Kosuth, Barbara Kruger and Glenn Ligon.
