“Getting to the Nutcracker”
Celebrate the Holiday Season with Flickers and the Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) at the Jamestown Arts Center, 18 Valley Street in Jamestown, RI for the “Roving Eye: FETE DU CINEMA” on Thursday, December 4th at 7:00 p.m. This year’s program will feature an exclusive screening of an acclaimed new documentary that takes a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of a holiday dance tradition.
Every Christmas season, the Nutcracker Ballet is performed in cities all over the world. What does it really take to produce this ballet each year? The feature documentary film, “Getting to The Nutcracker,” directed by Serene Meshel-Dillman, takes you inside the Herculean effort involved in gathering the resources, assembling the volunteers, casting the dancers, rehearsing and staging the performances of this classic ballet. Los Angeles-based Marat Daukayev School of Ballet, led by the former Kirov star, takes you behind the curtain from auditions, the rigorous hours of rehearsals, the joy of landing a principal role to the pain of losing one. The dancers (boys and girls ages 3-18) are profiled; passionate people who, with their families, make incredible sacrifices of time and money just so that they may dance.
A perfect program for the entire family, this special holiday screening will help raise needed funds for the community outreach and educational programs the Festival undertakes throughout the year. Tickets are $10 and $7 for kids up to age 12. (Special group rates are available by calling the Festival office in advance of the screening.) Additionally, all attendees will be entered in a free drawing for a full Festival pass worth $350.
Since its creation in 1981, Flickers has become a powerful and leading force promoting independent cinema. Founded as the Newport Film Society, its first official film screening took place in January 1983 at the Van Alen Casino Theater in Newport. Flickers evolved to include numerous year-round film-related events and production projects, and expanded its reach to locations throughout the Ocean State. Ranked as one of the top 10 Festivals in the United States, RIIFF is also a qualifying festival for the Short Film Academy Award through its affiliation with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. There are 19 film festivals worldwide which share this distinction and RIIFF is the only festival in New England. RIIFF now boasts 33 Academy Award nominations and seven wins, making an entry into the Festival an important credential to achieve.
